About us
Congenital heart diseases come in many variations. The list of congenital
malformations of the heart has now more than 2000 different diagnoses. In
addition, congenital heart diseases often occur combined with other
problems. However, even for difficult cases, many of the essential
structures of the normal heart are often present, and the main task of the
specialized cardio-vascular team is to identify the different parts of the
puzzle, to understand which function they have been designed for by nature,
and to re-organize or re-assemble them to a functioning organ which
provides the body with adequate flow of blood sufficiently saturated with
oxygen.
Although, significant progress has been made in the treatment of congenital
heart diseases over the last fifty years, there are still a number of
malformations lacking a correction with satisfactory long term outcome. In
addition, timely recognition of up-coming problems in patients (children
and adult) with cardiac malformations, can help to prevent irreversible
damage. Hence, continued efforts are necessary for further improvement of
prevention, diagnostic work-up, timely treatment, as well as short, and
long term follow-up.
The Congenital Heart Foundation has been set-up by a group of volunteers
dedicated to research and further improvement in care of patients with
congenital heart disease. Join-us and support efforts towards normal heart.
